This morning was special. I kissed someone and told him I needed and loved him before heading out to work. On the way there, a star landed a few feet from me. Before I could capture it, it floated out of my reach back to the sky. Cars hurried by, oblivious to the phenomenon. Instead, they all seem to be really interested in me, doing double takes as they drove by. Superman appeared from down the street. I pretended not to notice him as he hurried off to save somebody's day, relieved that he didn't think I needed his attention.
Screeeeeeeeeeech. Let's rewind this and strip away the illusions.
Clouds draped the morning in sad sack gray, pregnant with impending rain. I kissed my son before I left for work. He shrugged when I told him I loved him and replied "right."
A star-spangled helium balloon drifted by me on the street as I walked to the bus stop. No doubt it had escaped someone's fourth of July bouquet of decorations. I hurried to capture it but it drifted off before I could reach it, heading for the sky.
Superman did walk past me as I waited for the bus. I dared not to look him in the face for fear of retaliation. Instead of red tights, the middle aged black man wore red shorts and sneakers. He still had on his glasses. I guess he forgot to take them off before he changed into his cape, a padded superman "S" over his white tee shirt and a baseball cap. After he had passed far enough away, I turned to watch the man who was obviously suffering from some mental aberation. I shook my head in disbelief but it made my morning. That and the double takes. That was real.
