Top Five Songs

I remember High Fidelity the movie mostly for the scenes between John Cusack and Jack Black discussing their top five music list. I vaguely remember a romance between him and the exotic Lisa Bonet but the list making stands out more.

This is my top five. Of course this list is very fluid but my number one song has been a favorite for a while.

1. Allegro from Appalachian Springs by Aaron Copland. I remember waiting for my husband to get dressed before going to the hospital and listening to this song over and over and over. The highs and lows of this classical piece seemed to mirror my soul's roller coaster. I feel it from the inside out.

2. I Burn for You by Sting. Some anonymous stranger recommended this song to me when I told him I loved Sting. It became my favorite among many others the artist has recorded. It's the cool passion of his voice and smoldering words that get me. "Now that I have found you in the cool of your evening smile . . .though I lie here so still, I burn for you."

3. Shadows by Tom Scott. It's from an old album "Blow It Out" which has been remastered. The song is seductive, soulful, introspective. The saxophone caresses each note in musical foreplay. I remember listening to it in the dark in the park in a car with a special man. Ah, memories.

4.Ghost Box by Black Box is very similar to Shadows in style. It is a song I first heard on Chicago's smooth jazz radio station. Ghost Box is completely different from anything else Black Box does. Like Art of Noise's Moments in Love, Ghost Box seems to be an aberrant track into maturity. It is covertly and smoothly sexual.

5. My three favorite artists are Maxwell, Sting and Seal. I love everything each of them sing. So it's hard to choose between Maxwell or Seal. Maxwell has the voice of an angel or what I think an angel would sound like. Seal has this smoky, passionate tone that I find irresistable. Seal's Kiss from a Rose was a favorite of mine but it isn't on my top five any longer. Maxwell's This Woman's Work also was in my top five. So instead of trying to choose between the two, I will go with Daniel Bedingfield "If You're Not the One." It is totally sappy and sentimental and I love it. His voice is earnest and you feel his sincerity as he stretches into falsetto. So sue me. It's my list. Make your own.
